Mathematics in real-life
Our world is uniquely ordered - from the spiral of a double helix DNA strand to the vaguely-defined arms of a spiral galaxy. Math is a tool we can use to see the patterns and beauty in that structure and order.
"But when will I ever use math when I grow up if I'm not an engineer?!" Math is everywhere, if we choose to take the time to notice it. A student may be able to see it, but if not, it is our job to help guide them to it - then they can decide to appreciate the beauty in it. A quilt is all the more amazing once you acknowledge the mathematical order of it. A strum on a guitar or the plink on a piano is awe inspiring if we take the time to grasp how that sound is made and then travels to our ear and brain. Even if you're not the person who gets excited over the subject, work at it and take the time to truly see the wonder, if not for your own sake, than your student's. |
